United will be making changes this spring that will affect active ucom.net and unitedwireless.com email subscribers. If you are an active ucom.net or unitedwireless.com email subscriber, please keep an eye on your email in the coming months for more information about this from United.

The email servers used by United to host ucom.net and unitedwireless.com email accounts have reached end of life and are no longer supported by the vendor. United evaluated two options to continue offering email service:

Option #1 – Purchase new hardware and software licenses to offer an updated version of our current email service. This option would cost the cooperative (co-op) tens of thousands of dollars up front for hardware and thousands of dollars each month for software licenses. Since only a small percentage of co-op members utilize the United email service, this option is not a viable, sustainable solution.

Option #2 – Move to a third-party hosted email solution. With this option, United incurs a monthly charge per email account and passes that cost on to users of the service. This option proved to be the most cost-effective solution based on the number of users. This also ensures that only co-op members who use this service are the ones covering the expense.

As a cooperative association, it is our mission to provide communication services to our members in a sustainable way. To cover costs incurred providing email service, United will charge $3.00/month* per email address when the migration occurs this spring. Since this service was offered at no charge in the past, we are requiring everyone who wishes to continue to use the United email service and avoid account deletion to opt-in by calling our office at 620-227-8641 to confirm account information and the $3.00/month* charge.

If you decide to change to another email provider, there are many free options available (e.g., Gmail or Yahoo Mail). Simply sign up for that service and notify contacts of your new email address as soon as possible. If you have not already done so, please alert United of your decision so we can schedule deletion of your account.

*Email users who do not have any other active services with United will be charged $5.00/month per email address, billed annually ($60.00/year).
